SERIES
Old School Kung Fu Fest: Joseph Kuo
December 616, 2021Co-presented with Subway Cinema and with support from Taipei Cultural Center in New York, Ministry of Culture, Republic of China (Taiwan)
The Museum is pleased to welcome Subway Cinema’s popular series Old School Kung Fu Fest, now in its ninth edition. This year’s series focuses on Taiwanese independent director Joseph Kuo and features nine newly restored films, including fan-favorite Mystery of Chess Boxing in a 35mm print. A writer, producer, and director who ran his own production company, Hong Hwa International Films, Kuo delivered maximum impact on minimum budgets. His rotating cast of charismatic action stars included Wen Chiang-lung (who looks like Bruce Lee after a Cantopop makeover), the musclebound Carter Huang, the puckish Li Yi-min, underrated female fighter Jeanie Chang, and the versatile Jack Long and Mark Long, and he worked with such action choreographers as Corey Yuen and Yuen Cheung-yan, brother of Yuen Wo-ping. Kuo’s movies feature fight scenes that continually change location and up the ante: just when you think you’ve seen every possible variation on two guys standing in a field kicking the stuffing out of each other, Kuo takes it to another level.
MoMI and Subway Cinema will co-present four titles available exclusively online, December 6–13, and five films in our theaters, December 10–12.
